Ask most parents how they learned math, and "flashcards" comes up a lot — timed drills, a stack of cards, the pressure to answer before the timer runs out. It works, sort of: kids can learn to blurt out "8" when they see "5+3." But that's memorization, not math.
Number sense is the real goal
Number sense — understanding that 5 is "one more than 4" and "half of 10," that quantities can be split and combined — is what lets a child eventually solve problems they've never seen before. - It shows the quantities visually (objects, not just digits).
- Wrong answers are a quick, low-stakes "try again," not a hard stop.
